Annual Population Survey: Welsh language

The Census is the key source of information about the number of people who can speak Welsh. The Annual Population Survey collects information about respondents’ Welsh speaking ability and also includes a question on how often people speak Welsh. APS results are published every quarter. The APS estimates of Welsh language ability are historically higher than those produced by the Census.

Following the beta launch of the new StatsWales platform, from 26 September onward all new and updated datasets will be published exclusively via the new service. A small number of revisions were made to the data by age for quarter two of 2011 when moving to the new platform, in order to correct a small number of historical coding errors identified during the review process, and labelling within datasets by Welsh language skills was also corrected.
