Title

Number of assessments completed during the year where where physical punishment was a factor, by local authority

General description

The metric is designed to capture information about the impact of the proposed policy change in the Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Bill/ Act. Removing the defence of reasonable punishment is part of the national strategy Prosperity for All. The aim of the legislation is to help protect children’s rights by prohibiting the physical punishment of children by parents and those acting in loco parentis (acting as a parent) within Wales, including visitors to Wales. In doing so, children in Wales would have the same legal protection from physical punishment as adults.

Data collection and calculation

While extensive efforts have been made to gather reliable and accurate information from local authorities, data remains imperfect.
