This dataset provides the components of change within the official population estimates for the local authorities in Wales. These estimates are consistent with the results of Census 2011 and show the contributions that natural change (births less deaths); different elements of migration and other smaller adjustments make to the changing population estimates in each local authority over the period since 1991.It should be noted that there are some definitional changes for mid-2020 (particularly affecting the migration components) compared to mid-2019 populations estimates data and it is advised that users read the Quality and Methodology Information section on the Office for National Statistics website.
Internal migration estimates for mid-2023 have been produced using a different method to previous years, following a change to the variables available in the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) data. This has resulted in Wales level data for internal inward and internal outward migration being unavailable for mid-2023.

AnnualData reference periods
Data are produced and reported annually and relate to the change between 30 June of successive years from 1991 onwards.Users, uses and context
The data presented here are used by central government departments and local authorities for a range of purposes including planning and monitoring of services.Rounding applied
Data are provided on an unrounded basis although the Office for National Statistics advises that any results presented from these data are rounded to the nearest 100 where practical.Revisions information
The data presented here reflect changes made to population estimates from 2001 to 2010 in re-basing the data to be consistent with the results of Census 2011 (see weblinks). This data set consists of inflow and outflow for internal and international migration from 2012-13 onwards. This additional data replaces the international migration flow data set (POPU5022), because the ONS judged that the data is a more accurate source of long-term migration at a regional level.
Mid-2012 to mid-2016 subnational population estimates for Wales and England were revised on the 22 March 2018, following methodological improvements (see weblinks).
Revisions were made in July 2019 to two components of change, ‘Net international migration during the period’ and ‘Other changes including unattributable changes during period’, for the period 2001-02 to 2010-11. This was due to historical data not having been updated as a result of revisions following the publication of data from Census 2011.
On 23 November 2023, the data set from 2012 to 2020 for Wales and England was rebased to be consistent with the results of Census 2021.
On 15 July 2024 estimates for mid-2022 were revised by the ONS to account for updated estimates of international migration for Wales and England.
