General description

The weekly total number of COVID-19 tests authorised in a NHS Wales / non-NHS laboratory by location.

Statistical quality

The total number of tests completed may differ to other tables due to different reporting times.
This data includes all tests completed not solely the number of individuals tested. Therefore, the totals here will differ from the number of individuals tested or testing episodes.
The results performance shown is a measure from the date a sample is recorded as being collected to the time that the result is authorised. It does not indicate how long it takes for an individual to receive their result from point of testing.

Samples collected as part of regular screening programmes, such as asymptomatic tests in care homes are included in satellite asymptomatic screening of keyworkers. This also includes testing of residents where key workers are employed.

Samples collected in mass testing centres, community testing units and mobile testing units are included in community and mass testing: in person. These are tests for where there is a clinical need and may include pre-operative screening tests.

Tests included in other do not contain enough information in the Electronic Test Record (ETR) to assign to a category. These may also include samples taken in other locations such as GP surgeries.

The proportion of results authorised within a number of calendar days is based upon tests with a valid date, this may differ from the total number of tests presented below. For example, if an authorisation date was recorded as being before the sample was collected then this would be an invalid date and not included in the denominator for the calculation.

The data includes tests processed in NHS / non-NHS Wales therefore antigen lateral flow tests are not included.

Samples collected at mobile testing units are included in the data for regional testing centres, which is shown as community.

The majority of tests via the organisational portal to 28 August 2020 are from care homes. This was originally the care home portal but has since been expanded to include other organisations.

Between the weeks commencing 14 September 2020 and 12 October 2020, following changes in the source data provided by non-NHS Wales Laboratories, there were issues with allocating testing data to different pathways. This has now been resolved and a permanent solution is in place which is reflected in the data from the week commencing 19 October 2020. The interim solution used by Public Health Wales during this period was robust, therefore the data is comparable.

Some pilot test events to experiment with allowing audiences to return to live events require the individuals present to have a negative PCR test within the 5 days prior to the event. From 10 May 2021, tests taken by Welsh residents attending either a Welsh pilot event or an English pilot event are included in this data.
We won’t be revising data past 52 weeks.
