The information presented here contains information on GP practitioners (excluding GP Registrars, GP Retainers and locums).

Previously this table contained information on unrestricted principles, which is a category no longer identified following the introduction of the new GP contract on 1st April 2004


Data collection and calculation

Workforce flows are estimated by comparing successive GMS Censuses.

Joiners are those Practitioners reported in the the census one year, but not reported as a Practitioner in the previous year.

Leavers are those Practitioners reported in the census one year, but not reported the following year.

Data reference periods

Census dates are 1 October before 2000 and for 2009 and 30 September otherwise.
