Envi0012: Construction and demolition waste
Statistical Directorate, Welsh Assembly Government
Was added to StatsWales: March 2010
Last updated: March 2010
Construction and demolition (C&D) waste is defined as all of the waste produced by the C&D business sector. The C&D business sector in the UK contributed 8.2% to the UK’s Gross Value Added (GVA) output in 2006. This makes it the second largest construction output in the European Union (EU). The sector is also one of the UK’s biggest employers with over 2.2 million people employed by 200,000 companies in a variety of roles. These roles range from the suppliers, producers, contractors, sub-contractors, construction clients, and those involved in design, construction and maintenance of the built environment.
To find out more about the type and quantity of waste produced by this sector, Environment Agency Wales, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund, undertook a C&D waste survey. This included collecting data from 228 demolition, construction, civil engineering and refurbishment companies in Wales on the amounts and types of waste produced by their activities.
There may be some discrepancies in the tables, where the components do not sum up to the totals. These discrepancies are due to rounding.
The full survey results are available on the <a href=http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/research/library/publications/33979.aspx>Environment Agency Website</a>
