General description

The table shows the number of building fires rather than all smoke alarms. Where more than one smoke alarm was recorded at an incident the operation of the alarm has been ranked. The ranking is such that an alarm which operated and raised the alarm would be counted over one which didn't raise the alarm or one which didn't operate. Similarly an alarm which operated but didn't raise the alarm would be counted over one which didn't operate.
Note: 2008-09 Figures are partially based on sampled data, weighted to true brigade totals.
