These data give a summary of the general retail prices index (RPI) which is the main domestic measure of inflation in the United Kingdom.
The RPI measures the average change from month to month in the prices of goods and services purchased by most households in the United Kingdom. The RPI is usually presented in the form of an index which shows the relative position of prices with respect to those in January 1987. The dataset presented gives annual averages based on these monthly indices for years since 1987.
The spending pattern on which the index is based is revised every year, and is compiled using a large and representative selection of more than 650 goods and services for which price movements are regularly measured in around 150 areas throughout the UK. Some 120,000 separate price quotations are used each month in compiling the index.
The dataset given includes the 'all items' average index, together with the separate indices for a number of summary goods and services headings. Separate figures for Wales are not calculated.
