General description

The Quality Assurance and Improvement Framework (QAIF) was introduced as part of the General Medical Services (GMS) contract reform for 2019-20. It replaces the Quality and Outcome Framework (QOF), which was originally introduced in 2004 and ceased after 2018-19.

This StatsWales cube provides data on the number of patients on active disease registers, the overall number of patients registered at a GP practice and disease prevalence rates, using disease register data obtained through QAIF. These are lists of patients registered with GP practices who have been diagnosed with the medical condition as defined by the QAIF register indicator.

Data collection and calculation

The information presented here is provided to the Welsh Government by Digital Health and Care Wales.

Achievement against QAIF indicators is measured on a cycle of 1 October to 30 September. Data submissions are made from GP clinical systems from 30 September, with the final QAIF data reported as at 30 November following validation of data.

For Influenza, the data reflects the target population as defined by FLU001W and FLU002W. The data therefore includes the registered population aged 65 or more and the registered population aged under 65 with one or more of the qualifying conditions defined in QAIF (COPD, diabetes, CHD or stroke).

Data reference periods

Data are shown for 2019-20 onwards. Achievement against QAIF indicators is measured on a cycle of 1 October to 30 September. Data submissions are made from GP clinical systems from 30 September, with the final QAIF data reported as at 30 November following validation of data.

Rounding applied

Prevalence rates are rounded to 1 decimal place.

Revisions information

The 2019-20 data for the North Cynon cluster has been revised. The North Cynon cluster changed in the summer of 2018 as some practices moved to the South Cynon cluster. However, this cluster was on the old 2018 basis in the 24 June 2021 publication as the changes were known at a later date.

The 2019-20 data for the South Cynon cluster has been revised. The South Cynon cluster changed in the summer of 2018 as some practices moved in from the North Cynon cluster. However, this cluster was on the old 2018 basis in the 24 June 2021 publication as the changes were known at a later date.

The 2019-20 data for the Newport East and Newport West clusters have been revised. The Newport North cluster closed in March 2020 and the practices from this cluster moved to Newport East and Newport West. However, in the 24 June 2021 publication, the clusters were on the old pre-March 2020 basis as the changes were known at a later date.
