As the demand increases for statistics and data to measure the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to change our data gathering and release practices, focussing efforts on priority analysis and statistics.

Data Provider: Welsh Government National Statistics Number of attendances in NHS Wales accident and emergency departments by age band, sex and site

Following the announcement on Friday 13 March regarding the cancellation of certain medical procedures and the relaxation of performance targets, several national data collections temporarily ceased and we have also temporarily stopped reporting performance statistics. It was planned that these changes would be in place until at least the October 2020 reporting period; however most national data collections have now resumed and the publication of performance statistics is under review. We will notify users when these statistics will be published on our website.

General description
Data Prior to January 2013 will not be directly comparable with data for January 2013 onwards due to a change in methodology. See notes in March 2013 release for more details (January 2013).
Please note that this information is provided for contextual purposes only. The figures exclude data from some minor injury units (MIUs) in Wales as well as patients with unknown or invalid age or sex, and therefore total attendances would be lower than those quoted in statistical releases and other StatsWales datasets.
While there are some small numbers in the data collected and presented, the information is not considered to be sensitive in nature and there is no identifying information presented.

Revisions information
On a monthly basis, LHBs can resubmit data to NWIS if they have carried further validation during the month and they need to revise their data.

Data for February has been revised (26 June). This revision relates to Wrexam Maelor Hospital.
Following a re-submission, data published in June now includes 4,868 attendances which had previously not been included in this data table as they had unknown sex and age.
